Optimization of Distribution Centers
Challenge:
The distribution centers relied on outdated, batch-driven point-to-point integrations. This led to inefficient load carriers, frequent downtime, suboptimal truckloads, and additional steps to align orders with shelf layouts. These limitations hindered innovation and slowed market response.
Approach:
We modernized the system by integrating C/C++ algorithms into a Java application, encapsulated in microservices, and connected to the WMS through asynchronous APIs. ActiveMQ ensured reliable data transfer, while auto-scaling and auto-healing enabled continuity and a ‘pay per use’ model. An API catalog and dashboards provided self-service and operational insights.
Result:
Downtime was eliminated, resulting in savings of €70,000 per distribution center per period. Optimized truckloads led to significant cost and fuel savings. Load carriers were packed according to shelf layouts, saving time and increasing efficiency in both distribution centers and stores.
