Dutch Railways 'NS'

Integration Standards for Real-Time REST APIs in Public Transport

How SPECTR helped Dutch Railways standardize real-time REST integrations, improve API visibility and create a stronger foundation for future integration projects.

Intro: Dutch Railways needed a more structured and standardized approach to integration. The organization was working from a greenfield situation, with limited existing infrastructure, no uniform tooling and several processes still depending on manual work. SPECTR helped create clarity, structure and standards for real-time REST integrations by improving API registration, documentation, tooling, development guidelines, CI/CD, monitoring and integration patterns.

Challenge: The organization faced the challenge of reducing manual labor and modernizing processes, starting from a complete ‘greenfield’ scenario with no existing infrastructure. The absence of standardized tooling and the reliance on tightly coupled, rigid integrations increased the risk of vendor lock-in. Furthermore, the significance of robust integrations was not widely understood within the organization, resulting in inefficient workflows and labor-intensive manual processes.

Approach: We registered existing interfaces in the NS API portal to gain an overview of the current landscape. Tooling was aligned with standards from other NS domains, and processes in need of renewal were identified. Based on this, we designed and documented improvements. Through close collaboration with solution architects, we provided strategic integration advice for new projects, enabling structural enhancements.

Result: Integration registrations are now fully aligned with organization-wide standards, supported by newly implemented guidelines for documentation, development, CI/CD, integration patterns, and monitoring. Integration has evolved into a deliberate and integral part of future system designs, enabling the organization to better unlock business objects and achieve greater efficiency and flexibility in its processes.

  • Lack of standardized tooling for integration delivery
  • Tightly coupled integrations increased the risk of vendor lock-in
  • Limited awareness of the strategic value of robust integrations
  • Manual processes created inefficient workflows
  • Need for better visibility of existing interfaces
  • Need for standards around documentation, development and monitoring
Integration Standards

Approach

  • Registering existing interfaces in the NS API portal
  • Creating transparency across the current integration landscape
  • Aligning tooling with standards used in other NS domains
  • Identifying processes that needed modernization
  • Designing and documenting practical improvements
  • Advising solution architects on new integration projects
  • Defining standards for integration patterns and platform use
  • Supporting guidelines for CI/CD, monitoring and IoT-related integrations
