Accelerating SAP Transformation at Ahold Delhaize

Introduction
A global SAP transformation had lost momentum. Growing complexity, recurring incidents and slow delivery were limiting progress across Ahold Delhaize’s international IT landscape. SPECTR stepped in with a focused intervention to restore control and create the foundation for a faster, more stable and scalable transformation.

The SAP transformation challenge
Ahold Delhaize was in the midst of modernizing its global SAP landscape but ran into growing technical complexity, delays, and error-prone processes. Previous collaborations had not delivered the desired results. SPECTR was brought in to perform a focused intervention — to accelerate, stabilize, and simplify the transformation.

Cloud migration and integration modernization
Working closely with the Global Support Organization, we first brought structure and clarity to the situation. We migrated key SAP components to the cloud, implemented CI/CD pipelines, and automated error handling and incident reporting. By reusing existing APIs and enforcing standardization, the integration landscape became both faster and more stable. Advanced techniques such as autoscaling, canary releases, and automated testing enabled zero-downtime deployments and reduced operational pressure.

Results for Ahold Delhaize
The impact of the intervention was felt across the organization. Processes that previously took weeks were reduced to just days. Incidents dropped sharply, provisioning errors were virtually eliminated, and average resolution times were significantly shortened. At the same time, platform reliability improved, costs were reduced, and teams regained trust and control over their IT landscape. What had been a reactive environment became one focused on innovation.

Lessons Learned
The project demonstrated that standardization and reusable components can significantly accelerate delivery while improving quality. Automation proved essential for increasing stability and scalability, while clear ownership and self-service capabilities helped teams maintain control without slowing down collaboration.
